Like all the islands in the Cyclades, Naxos at the first glance appears in most areas rather barren and empty. Nevertheless, with a little patience and luck, one can observe many interesting animals on the island, especially among the smaller species such as insects. An important factor is that the agriculture in most areas has no intensive farming, leaving plenty of space for our small neighbours and allowing even more sensitive species to find a niche in which to survive.
Although identifying the species is often difficult, I present on the following pages many of the island’s more common and also some rarer animals with lots of photos, if only to document their diversity, curiosity and beauty and – hopefully – to awaken some interest in the reader.
