The marine fauna in Azalas is still quite diverse. Although the sea is overfished, as nearly everywhere in the Aegean, it is still relatively clean. The various plant and animal communities in the different habitats are still quite intact. The area around the waterline is particularly interesting and rich in species, with beautiful reef-like structures built up out of calcareous red algae that provide a living space for many animals. The extensive sea grass meadows, which provide food and shelter for countless animals, are of particular value.
With a few exceptions, I took the pictures of the marine organisms presented here from land, which is easier than one might think when the weather is completely calm; nevertheless, only organisms that live directly on the coast are accessible in this way.
