Welcome in Azalas!

In one of the most beautiful areas of Naxos we rent four Holiday homes, built in the traditional way from natural stone, and situated directly at the Aegean sea next to a beautiful small sand beach.

The establishment lies on the quiet and sparsely inhabited east coast of Naxos near to the small settlement of Agios Dimitris, three kilometers to the north of the picturesque harbour village of Moutsouna.

Our Holiday homes

Our cottages, each for 2 to 4 persons, are built in the traditional way from natural stone and furnished with handmade curtains, marble and wood. For the hot summer days they are equipped with air conditioning; in the winter they can be heated by a fireplace. Each cottage has its own veranda with a wonderful view of the Aegean sea. The cottages lie on a property of 7.000 sqm among olive- and fruit trees, vineyards and vegetable gardens. Directly in front of the property lies an idyllic small sand beach, perfect for a refreshing swim in the sea.

… here you can simply relax and enjoy! …

Our island: Naxos is worth more than one trip!

Naxos is small enough that you can get everywhere in one day, but at the same time very rich and diverse. “I Eudaimoníi ton níson” – not without reason did Herodotus call it the most fortunate of the islands.
On our web site you find detailed information on the nature and culture of Naxos, covering many different topics. We invite you to truly come into touch with our island, exploring it in interesting tours and on wonderful hikes, and to learn about, see and experience its history and monuments, its fauna and flora, its geology and cultural landscape.
  • Naxos is very diverse.

  • rock tower at the east coast

  • Many hiking trails lead into every corner of the island.

  • the rare Eleonora’s falcon – a fascinating bird species

  • small blenny at the coast

    Landscape and Nature

The island of Naxos with its diverse landscape offers many possibilities for excursions: You can climb the highest mountain of the Cyclades, hike through scenic valleys with terraces, vineyards and olive trees, or visit remote coves along the coast or the enchanted springs and rivers of the island.

In spring the whole island is in flower. Mountains and valleys are populated with many interesting birds, insects and reptiles. Also it is always worthwhile to explore the coast and to meet some of the fascinating inhabitants of the sea.

    History and monuments

Naxos looks back onto a long and fascinating past: The island has been inhabitated since the stone age, and many remains, artefacts and ruins from all the different epochs are still preserved today. We can get a glimpse of every epoch of the island’s history by visiting its monuments and the museums.

As largest island of the Cyclades, Naxos played an important role during many epochs: It was for example an important centre during the Cycladic culture in Early bronze age, known for its amazing marble idols, during the Archaic epoch, when the large temples of the island were constructed, and in the late Medieval times, when Naxos was seat of the Venetian Duchy of the Archipelago.

    • Panagía Drosianí near Moní from the 6th century
    • the famous temple gate in Chóra, the Portára
    • archaic marble statue near Mélanes
    • stone circle in the ancient cemetary near Tsikalarió
    • Venetian tower in Agiá
      • Crocus laevigatus

      • the lichen species Caloplaca aurantium

      • great Downy oak near Apíranthos

      • Symphytum davisii naxicola

      • Capparis spinosa

        The flora of Naxos

As largest island of the Cyclades and being relatively rich in water Naxos is home to an abundant flora: more than 1000 species have been recorded on the island. Of these we present more than 700 on this web site, with many informative and beautiful photos and detailed descriptions of the characteristics, the distribution and properties of the plants.

For people who are interested in plants we offer (mostly in spring) tours and excursions, either around Azalás or as a hike in the mountains, along some valley or through the old cultural landscape.

In the category “News” I may publish for example an article about plant- or animal species that I find for the first time, about a monument or an archaeological site that we visited or about a memorable hike.

And sometimes I simply share a special moment with my readers – a picture of a beautiful sunrise, of snow in the mountains or of an impressive rainfall.

What our guests say about Azalas:

                          • Azalas lies nearly at the end of the road, but it is the doorway to an enchanting corner of the Earth: It calls you to marvel at a sunrise, to explore the rich nature, to participate in the firing of the wood oven, or simply to enjoy your time around the cottage.

                            Pure relaxation!

                            Katja

                          • Azalas means to me: Astrid and Nikos and their family with great knowledge and great hearts, divine nature, divine peace.

There is no place where I can find to myself and unwind like here in Azalas.

                            Friederike

                          • Life, in it’s purest form

                            Norman

                          • Azalas has become a second home for us since 2004. We, our children and our grandchildren visited Azalas around 20 times.

Astrid and Nikos always welcomed us warmly, let us participate in their life and provided us with fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, wine, bread, music – in short: hospitality XL

The quiet, the wonderful view of the sea, what could one want more? Not to forget also the many hiking tours following Astrid’s tips.
