On Naxos, many old traditions are still alive and some of the traditional way of life has survived to this day in the villages. Until the 1960s, people on the island still lived largely according to the centuries-old self-sufficient economy. Today, of course, modern means and methods are used for many things, but evidence of the old way of life and agriculture has been preserved all over the island.
The old, hand-operated oil mills, for example, are understandably no longer used today, but there is practically no village on Naxos that has not restored one of its old oil mills; and there are also folklore museums in many villages, where old equipment and tools are exhibited.
