The riverbed is dry for most of the year; water only flows here after very heavy rainfall. Such intermittent rivers are called torrente.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/apocynaceae\/nerium_oleander_habitat-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Oleander, Nerium oleander\"><br \/>\n<small>The most characteristic plant of the torrente is the oleander <em>(Nerium oleander)<\/em>, which in May and June marks the courses of the rivers with its magnificent intense pink colour (the pictures with blooming oleander were taken in June).<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/DSCN4003-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"river valley with water\" \/><br \/>\n<small>After a heavy rainfall, the valley looks like this. The water may run for a few hours or days.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/apocynaceae\/nerium_oleander-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Oleander, Nerium oleander\"><br \/>\n<small>The highly poisonous oleander is doubtless one of the most beautiful plants of the Mediterranean region.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/apocynaceae\/nerium_oleander_flower-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Oleander, Nerium oleander\"><br \/>\n<small>The large, fragrant flowers are pollinated mainly by large moths.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/apocynaceae\/nerium_oleander_saplings-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Oleander, Nerium oleander\"><br \/>\n<small>Many saplings grow in the river bed.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020227-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"river valley\" \/><br \/>\n<small>Along the valley grow also quite a few other tree and shrub species.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020159-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"plane tree, Platanus orientalis\" \/><br \/>\n<small>Plane trees <em>(Platanus orientalis)<\/em> need more water than oleander and are more common in the higher, more humid areas.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/lamiaceae\/salvia_fruticosa-3.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Greek sage, Salvia fruticosa\"><br \/>\n<small>Another characteristic plant of the torrente is sage <em>(Salvia fruticosa)<\/em>, the leaves of which can be used to make a delicious tea in winter that is excellent for relieving sore throats.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/poaceae\/briza_maxima_detail-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Greater quaking grass, Briza maxima\" \/><br \/>\n<small>One of my favourite grass species is the Greater quaking grass, <em>Briza maxima<\/em>.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020173-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Gorge of Spilia in Azalas\" \/><br \/>\n<small>Finally one reaches a small gorge.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/azalas\/area\/spilia_gorge-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Gorge of Spilia in Azalas\" \/><br \/>\n<small>The gorge is very narrow with 10 metre high rock faces.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020177-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Gorge of Spilia in Azalas\" \/><br \/>\n<small>It ends at a steep rocky drop.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020180-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Gorge of Spilia in Azalas\" \/><br \/>\n<small>A little water still flows here, forming a small pond which dries up in summer.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020192-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Gorge of Spilia in Azalas\" \/><br \/>\n<small>In several places, water runs down the rock walls.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020194-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"maidenhair fern, Adiantum capillus-veneris\" \/><br \/>\n<small>On the wet rock grows the maidenhair fern <em>(Adiantum capillus-veneris)<\/em>, the only species of  an ancient fern family that has survived in Europe as a relict of the Tertiary period.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020204-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Gorge of Spilia in Azalas\" \/><br \/>\n<small>Above the gorge lies a small shepherd&#8217;s farm called <em>Spili\u00e1<\/em> (= cave).
