Nachdem die Insel schon in der Fr\u00fchen bis Mittleren Steinzeit von Neandertalern besucht wurde, kam es in der Jungsteinzeit zu einer Besiedlung in gr\u00f6\u00dferem Ma\u00dfstab. Die fr\u00fchbronzezeitliche &#8220;Kykladenkultur&#8221; im 3. Jahrtausend v.Chr. kann als erste h\u00f6here Kultur Europas und einer der Ausgangspunkte der kulturellen Entwicklung des ganzen Kontinents gelten. Auch in den sp\u00e4teren Jahrtausenden hat die Insel immer wieder eine wichtige Rolle in der \u00c4g\u00e4is gespielt.
