In our region, this &#8220;reef&#8221; is sometimes clearly visible, although it is nowhere particularly wide. The most common and important calcareous alga in our region is the crustose species <em>Lithophyllum incrustans<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/mesolitoral-2.jpg\" alt=\"Eulittoral\"><br \/>\n<small>Many calcareous red algae grow in the eulittoral zone, especially the crustose species <em>Lithophyllum incrustans<\/em>.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/red_algae\/calcareous_red_algae-4.jpg\" alt=\"Calcareous algae reef, Naxos\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Lithophyllum incrustans<\/em> often forms quite thick layers.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/red_algae\/calcareous_red_algae-5.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Calcareous algae reef, Naxos\"><br \/>\n<small>In many places, shrub-like or cushion-like species also occur.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/algae_coast-2.jpg\" alt=\"Calcareous algae reef, Naxos\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small>Directly at the waterline, calcareous algae often form a reef-like structure. In our region, this is usually not very thick, but often clearly recognizable.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/algae_coast-3.jpg\" alt=\"Calcareous algae reef, Naxos\" border=\"0\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/red_algae\/calcareous_red_algae-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Calcareous algae reef, Naxos\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/red_algae\/calcareous_red_algae-1.jpg\" alt=\"Calcareous algae reef, Naxos\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/red_algae\/calcareous_red_algae-6.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Calcareous algae reef, Naxos\"><br \/>\n<small>Small cavities form among the calcareous algae, providing shelter for numerous animals.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>A<\/big>mong the most interesting animals that live or find shelter in the calcareous algae &#8220;reef&#8221; are the sessile worm snails, which occur here in thousands, the well-camouflaged chitons and various species of bivalvia and marine snails. One can also find hermit crabs <em>(Clibanarius erythropus)<\/em>, the crab species <em>Eriphia verrucosa<\/em> and <em>Pachygrapsus marmoratus<\/em> and the small, interesting blennies, which often sit in places that fall dry in between the waves.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/sea_snails\/dendropoma_cristatum-1.jpg\" alt=\"worm snail, Dendropoma cristatum\"><br \/>\n<small>The small, sessile worm snails of the species <em>Dendropoma cristatum<\/em> live in large numbers directly at the waterline, where they are mostly covered by the crustose calcareous alga <em>Lithophyllum incrustans<\/em>, which leaves only the shell openings free.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/sea_snails\/vermetus_triquetrus-1.jpg\" alt=\"worm snail, Vermetus triquetrus\"><br \/>\n<small>The rarer species <em>Vermetus triquetrus<\/em> is usually not overgrown by <em>Lithophyllum incrustans<\/em>, so that one can see the worm-shaped, irregularly formed shell adhering to the substrate, which in this species is slightly triangular in shape.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/chitons\/rhyssoplax_olivacea-2.jpg\" alt=\"chiton, Rhyssoplax olivacea\"><br \/>\n<small>The shell of the rare and inconspicuous chiton consists of several leathery plates that can be moved relative to each other, with a muscular belt around.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/shellfish\/live_mussel-1.jpg\" alt=\"bivalve\"><br \/>\n<small>Bivalvia are also rare and very hard to spot.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/sea_snails\/marine_snails-1.jpg\" alt=\"hermit crabs in the eulittoral\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small>Hermit crabs in snail shells of various species (here mainly <em>Columbella rustica<\/em>) often gather at the water line.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/crustaceans\/eriphia_verrucosa-4.jpg\" alt=\"Eriphia verrucosa\"><br \/>\n<small>The warty crab also lives in the calcareous algae &#8220;reef&#8221;.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/fish\/tripterygion_tripteronotum_female-1.jpg\" alt=\"Tripterygion tripteronotus\"><br \/>\n<small>Different blenny species can be observed, here <em>Tripterygion tripteronotus.<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/fish\/coryphoblennius_galerita-2.jpg\" alt=\"Coryphoblennius galerita\"><br \/>\n<small>The small blenny <em>Coryphoblennius galerita<\/em> likes to sit in places that fall dry in between the waves.<\/small><\/p>\n<p>see also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/en\/mediterranean-introduction\/\">introduction to the Mediterranean Sea<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/en\/naxos-marine-animals\/\">The marine animals<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/en\/naxos-marine-plants\/\">The marine plants<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/en\/algae\/\">Algae<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/en\/calcareous-red-algae\/\">Calcareous red algae<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/en\/in-the-algae\/\">Life between the algae<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/en\/content\/\">Web site content<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Calcareous algae often form a thick, almost reef-like layer on both slate and marble in the tidal zone (eulittoral), in places creating a wide, embankment-like ledge that is inhabited by many organisms.
