They usually have a characteristic brownish colour. Brown algae include most of the more or less leaf-shaped seaweeds that often form huge forests in the oceans. They form extensive colonies, especially on slate in shallow water. The most common genus is <em>Cystoseira<\/em> with numerous, partly endemic species, which are generally difficult to distinguish. Apart from <em>Cystoseira<\/em>, <em>Dictyota dichotoma<\/em> and Peacock&#8217;s tail <em>(Padina pavonica)<\/em> are the most common species.<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"clear\"><\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-width: 2px;\">\n<a name=\"Arten\"><font color=\"#ffffff\">Brown algae on Naxos<\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/en\/photogallery-marine-plants\/\"><strong>Photo gallery of the marine plants<\/strong><\/a> gives an overview over the species.<\/p>\n<p><small><strong>A note on identification:<\/strong> Some species of algae can be identified easily and reliably. In many cases, however, there are several related species that are difficult to distinguish. Often, examination under a microscope is necessary for correct identification. Another problem with the identification is that not all species are included in the field guides; even using the internet, it is difficult to find information on many species. Often, the species identified with the help of books or photos on the internet look quite different from our specimen here. Lamouroux<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>common in shallow water, especially on slate<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dictyota dichotoma\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/dictyota_dichotoma-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Dictyota dichotoma<\/em> is easily recognisable by its ribbon-shaped, forked thallus.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dictyota dichotoma\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/dictyota_dichotoma-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>The fine dots on the thallus are the spore-producing areas.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dictyota dichotoma\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/dictyota_dichotoma-4.jpg\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small>Here, the spore-producing areas are arranged in indistinct transverse lines.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dictyota dichotoma\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/dictyota_dichotoma-3.jpg\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small> Sometimes <em>Dictyota dichotoma<\/em> shows a greenish iridescence.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><em>Dictyota dichotoma var. intericata<\/em>, Greville<\/h6>\n<p>much rarer, found on granite in the south-west of Naxos; at the waterline<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dictyota dichotoma var. intericata\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/dictyota_dichotoma_intricata-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Dictyota dichotoma var. intericata<\/em> has much finer thallus sections, which are approximately the same width along their entire length.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><em>Dictyota fasciola<\/em>, J. V. Lamouroux<\/h6>\n<p>very rare, perhaps in deeper water<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/dictyota_fasciola-1.jpg\" alt=\"Dictyota fasciola\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small>In this species, the narrow thallus sections become thinner towards the ends; the plant forms an upward-spreading tuft that is attached to the substrate with an adhesive organ.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><a name=\"B\"><em>Taonia atomaria<\/em>, J. Agardh<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>rare, in slightly deeper water<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Taonia atomaria\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/taonia_atomaria-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>This species is closely related to the genus <em>Dictyota<\/em>, but it does not occur directly at coast; occasionally we find it washed ashore.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Taonia atomaria\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/taonia_atomaria-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>Its very thin thallus is divided into lobes or narrow bands that taper towards the ends. The spores are produced in the darker transverse bands.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><a name=\"C\"><em>Zonaria tournefortii<\/em>, Montagne<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>very rare<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/zonaria_tournefortii-1.jpg\" alt=\"Zonaria tournefortii\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small>The thallus of this species is irregularly divided into larger and smaller sections, which always have a broad, rounded end. It shows clearly visible transverse bands.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><a name=\"D\">Peacock&#8217;s tail, <em>Padina pavonica<\/em>, L.<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>common in shallow water, especially on slate<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Padina pavonica\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/padina_pavonica-1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Padina pavonica\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/padina_pavonica-2.jpg\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small>The unmistakable Peacock&#8217;s tail is one of the common brown algae in our region.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><a name=\"E\"><em>Stypopodium zonale ?<\/em>, Papenfuss<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>rare, inconspicuous and small<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Stypopodium zonale?\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/stypopodium_zonale-1.jpg\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small>This very small alga forms a thin, fan-shaped thallus. It shows a very strong blue-green iridescence.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Stypopodium zonale?\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/stypopodium_zonale-2.jpg\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small>Here you can see the fine transverse bands on the thallus.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><a name=\"F\"><em>Cystoseira<\/em><\/a><\/h6>\n<p>very common in the infralittoral zone from the waterline downwards<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cystoseira\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/cystoseira-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>The genus <em>Cystoseira<\/em> is particularly typical of the Mediterranean region. Most species are difficult to tell apart.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cystoseira\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/cystoseira-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>The species of <em>Cystoseira<\/em> have round stems, from which many branched fronds emerge, often bearing small pneumatocysts (air filled swim bodies) or spines.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cystoseira\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/cystoseira-3.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>Some species are finely branched, such as the one pictured here.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>I<\/big>dentification of the species is not easy. Here an attempt:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cystoseira\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/cystoseira_abies_marina-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Cystoseira abies-marina<\/em> has no pneumatocysts, but sawtooth-like spines.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cystoseira\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/cystoseira_barbata-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Cystoseira barbata<\/em> has no spines, but slightly inflated pneumatocysts arranged in chains.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cystoseira\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/cystoseira_mediterranea-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Cystoseira mediterranea<\/em> (middle) shows a greenish iridescence.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cystoseira\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/cystoseira_mediterranea-3.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>This species is supposed to have small thorns clustered densely at the ends of the branches; however, these are missing here and the branching is quite sparse, making identification uncertain.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cystoseira\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/cystoseira_mediterranea-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>Here is a specimen with finer branches; possibly a different species.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><em>Cystoseira compressa<\/em>, Gerloff &amp; Nizamuddin<\/h6>\n<p>Unlike other species, <em>Cystoseira compressa<\/em> occurs primarily in the eulittoral zone, where it is very common.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cystoseira compressa\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/cystoseira_compressa-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Cystoseira compressa<\/em> differs from other species in its  flat and branched thalli. It has neither pneumatocysts nor spines.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cystoseira compressa\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/cystoseira_compressa-2.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cystoseira compressa\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/cystoseira_compressa-3.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>Numerous white dots (spore-forming zones?) sit on the thallus.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6>unidentified species<\/h6>\n<p>rare, on marble in the eulittoral<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/unidentified_brown_alga-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>This stiff alga with short, strong, ribbon-shaped leaves is rather rare in our region. It occurs close to the waterline on marble.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/unidentified_brown_alga-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>At first glance, the species resembles a <em>Fucus<\/em>, but it grows upright, is very stiff and has only an indistinct, broad midrib; the pneumatocysts typical of this genus are also missing.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/unidentified_brown_alga-3.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>The smooth leaves are covered with many small \u2018bubbles\u2019 which probably produce the spores.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><a name=\"G\"><em>Sporochnus pedunculatus ?<\/em>, C.
