Most species have an intense green colour (some red algae are also green). Green algae display very different growth forms. The thallus (body) can, for example, be leaf-like, turf-like or club-shaped. Some green algae are delicate and thin; they occur mainly in calm waters, where they often form large colonies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#Arten\">Here you can skip the introduction and go directly to the species.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/algae-1.jpg\" alt=\"various algae species\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small>Here, the green alga <em>Caulerpa racemosa<\/em> grows between brown and red algae.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>A<\/big>round Naxos only a few species of green algae are common. They are mainly found in the intertidal zone (eulittoral) and in the shallow water. The most conspicuous species is the turf-like <em>Chaetomorpha<\/em>, which grows on slate near the waterline. In sandy bays such as P\u00e1normos or Ap\u00f3llonas, the leaf-like sea lettuce is also common. Other species such as the mermaid&#8217;s wine glass, <em>Halimeda tuna<\/em> and <em>Caulerpa racemosa<\/em> can only be found with a little more searching.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/algae-2.jpg\" alt=\"various types of algae\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small>Green algae, which are usually quite easy to recognise by their intense green colour, usually make up only a small proportion of the algae flora in our area.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><br class=\"clear\"><\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-width: 2px;\">\n<a name=\"Arten\"><font color=\"#ffffff\">Species of green algae on Naxos<\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/en\/photogallery-marine-plants\/\"><strong>Photo gallery of the marine plants<\/strong><\/a> gives an overview over the species. Please note that many identifications are uncertain.<\/p>\n<p><small><strong>A note on identification:<\/strong> Some species of algae can be identified easily and reliably. In many cases, however, there are several related species that are difficult to distinguish. Often, examination under a microscope is necessary for correct identification. Another problem with the identification is that not all species are included in the field guides; even using the internet, it is difficult to find information on many species. Often, the species identified with the help of books or photos on the internet look quite different from our specimen here. It has a very high content in various minerals.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ulva lactuca\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/ulva_lactuca-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>Sea lettuce is typical of calm, sandy bays with brackish or even slightly polluted water; it does not occur here in Azal\u00e1s, but we have found it in P\u00e1normos and Ap\u00f3llonas.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ulva lactuca\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/ulva_lactuca-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>The species <em>Ulva lactuca<\/em> can be recognised by its very delicate leaves with smooth edges.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><em>Ulva intestinalis ?<\/em>, L.<\/h6>\n<p>in Ap\u00f3llonas on washed-over, wave-exposed slate rocks together with Chaetomorpha; the species are difficult to identify<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ulva intestinalis\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/ulva_intestinalis-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>This species with tubular, ribbon-like frond branches is probably <em>Ulva intestinalis<\/em>.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><a name=\"B\"><em>Anadyomene stellata<\/em>, C. Agardh<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>rather rare and inconspicuous, from the eulittoral downwards<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Anadyomene stellata\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/anadyomene_stellata-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>The small species <em>Anadyomene stellata<\/em>, which is rare in our region, has stiff leaves arranged in tight clusters.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Anadyomene stellata\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/anadyomene_stellata-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>It can be recognised by the characteristic fan-shaped arrangement of its cells.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><a name=\"C\"><em>Chaetomorpha spec. ?<\/em><\/a><\/h6>\n<p>common on slate; tolerates prolonged exposure to the air<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Chaetomorpha?\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/chaetomorpha_spec-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Chaetomorpha<\/em> grows in dense turf-like stands on slate directly at the waterline.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Chaetomorpha?\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/chaetomorpha_spec-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>The individual thallus filaments consist of unbranched rows of cells, which in most species are more tangled than here; therefore, the identification is uncertain.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><a name=\"D\"><em>Caulerpa racemosa<\/em>, J. Agardh<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>occasional, below the waterline<\/p>\n<p><big>T<\/big>he native species <em>Caulerpa racemosa<\/em> is closely related to the invasive toxic species <em>Caulerpa taxifolia<\/em>, which has caused great damage in the central Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Caulerpa racemosa\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/caulerpa_racemosa-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Caulerpa racemosa<\/em> is unmistakable with its small stems with club-shaped protrusions that grow from horizontal stolons.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><em>Caulerpa prolifera<\/em>, J. V. Lamouroux<\/h6>\n<p>rare, found in sandy or gravelly bays, in shallow water<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Caulerpa prolifera\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/caulerpa_prolifera-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>This species has slender, inconspicuous stolons (not visible here) that bear bright green, elongated \u2018leaves\u2019.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><a name=\"E\"><em>Flabellia petiolata<\/em>, Nizamuddin<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>rare, in deeper water; near the surface in sheltered locations<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/flabellia_petiolata-3.jpg\" alt=\"Flabellia petiolata\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Flabellia petiolata<\/em> occurs in shady locations such as under overhanging rocks. It is quite rare in our area.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Flabellia petiolata\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/flabellia_petiolata-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Flabellia petiolata<\/em> has a fan-shaped thallus with a long, slender stem and a rounded, usually slightly frayed \u2018fan\u2019.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Flabellia petiolata\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/flabellia_petiolata-2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small>The thallus is dark green in colour.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><a name=\"F\"><em>Halimeda tuna<\/em>, J. V. Lamouroux<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>occasional, below the waterline<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Halimeda tuna\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/green_algae\/halimeda_tuna-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Halimeda tuna<\/em> has calcified thallus &#8220;discs&#8221; arranged in a chain-like pattern. It is rather rare, but easily recognisable.<\/small><\/p>\n<h6><a name=\"G\">Mermaid&#8217;s wine glass, <em>Acetabularia acetabulum<\/em>, P.C.
