This is the peak flowering time for most plants: There are chrysanthema and daisies, poppies and bindweed, numerous varieties of clover and vetch and many more.<\/p>\n<p><big>I<\/big>f you come to Naxos in April, you should not miss a walk through the phrygana, the dwarf shrub community that occurs in Azal\u00e1s on schist and on shallow, infertile soils above solidified river comglomerates. Here grow cistus and broom, blooming abundantly, as well as countless smaller flowers among the shrubs, little treasures whose beauty you can only discover by taking the time to search and look closely. Here some photos of a few species that you will meet on a short walk through the phrygana in the immediate vicinity of Azal\u00e1s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/azalas\/area\/agios_dimitris_phrygana.jpg\" alt=\"landscape in Azalas\"><\/p>\n<p><big>I<\/big>n April, the two most common shrub species in the phrygana are in bloom: the spiny broom and the Montpellier cistus. The broom exudes a pleasant fragrance that covers the whole area, especially on warm, windless days. The spiny broom <em>Calicotome villosa<\/em> is common throughout the island, especially on marble.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/fabaceae\/calicotome_villosa-1.jpg\" alt=\"Calicotome villosa\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/fabaceae\/calicotome_villosa_flower-1.jpg\" alt=\"Calicotome villosa\"><br \/>\n<small>Spiny broom, <em>Calicotome villosa<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>O<\/big>f the three cistus species that occur on Naxos, only the Montpellier cistus <em>(Cistus monspeliensis)<\/em> is common in Azal\u00e1s. It starts flowering a little later than the spiny broom. Some bushes are completely covered with the pretty white flowers with their delicate petals.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/cistaceae\/cistus_monspeliensis-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Cistus monspeliensis\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/cistaceae\/cistus_monspeliensis_flower-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Montpellier cistus, Cistus monspeliensis\"><br \/>\n<small>Montpellier cistus, <em>Cistus monspeliensis<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>T<\/big>he kermes oak is also in bloom, although its flowers are much less conspicuous than those of the rock roses and the broom.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/fagaceae\/quercus_coccifera_flower-2.jpg\" alt=\"Kermes oak, Quercus coccifera\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/fagaceae\/quercus_coccifera-4.jpg\" alt=\"Kermes oak, Quercus coccifera\"><br \/>\n<small>When browsed intensely, the kermes oak <em>(Quercus coccifera)<\/em> usually remains a low shrub, but it can also grow up to a stately tree.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>I<\/big>t is marvellous to walk through the fragrant, blooming phrygana and take pictures of all the little flowers growing among the shrubs!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/azalas\/area\/phrygana-1.jpg\" alt=\"in the phrygana near Azalas\"><\/p>\n<p><big>A<\/big> delicate, white lily species grows in the phrygana: <em>Gagea graeca<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/liliaceae\/gagea_graeca-6.jpg\" alt=\"Gagea graeca\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Gagea graeca<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>M<\/big>any species of clover occur regularly in the phrygana. The unmistakable <em>Trifolium uniflorum<\/em> grows as a low cushion; it is very common on Naxos.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/fabaceae\/trifolium_uniflorum-1.jpg\" alt=\"Trifolium uniflorum\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Trifolium uniflorum<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>S<\/big>everal species of cranesbill occur on Naxos; here the a pretty fruit of <em>Geranium rotundifolium<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/geraniaceae\/geranium_rotundifolium_fruit-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"fruit of Geranium rotundifolium\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Geranium rotundifolium<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>H<\/big>ere and there, near the course of the river, ony may encounter the stiff-haired <em>Onosma graeca<\/em> of the borage family.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/boraginaceae\/onosma_graeca-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Onosma graeca\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/boraginaceae\/onosma_graeca_detail-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Onosma graeca\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Onosma graeca<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>T<\/big>he clover species <em>Tripodion tetraphyllum<\/em> is particularly pretty with its conspicuous inflated calyxes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/fabaceae\/tripodion_tetraphyllum-2.jpg\" alt=\"Blasen-Wundklee, Tripodion tetraphyllum\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Tripodion tetraphyllum<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>T<\/big>his small plant belongs to the sage genus: <em>Salvia viridis<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/lamiaceae\/salvia_viridis-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Salvia viridis\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Salvia viridis<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>W<\/big>e only find one orchid on our walk, probably <em>Ophrys scolopax ssp. cornuta<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/orchidaceae\/ophrys_scolopax_cornuta_flower-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ophrys scolopax ssp. cornuta\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Ophrys scolopax ssp. cornuta<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>T<\/big>he most common bird species in the phrygana, as on the island in general, is the Sardinian warbler. Everywhere we hear its warning call and the song, a simple, not particularly melodious rattle. We also occasionally hear a cirl bunting, whose song is somewhat resembles that of the yellowhammer. Here and there, a small flock of goldfinches flutters past; we also hear greenfinches and linnets. In the distance, the soothing, melodious song of the Orphean warbler can be heard from a group of trees.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/azalas\/area\/phrygana-2.jpg\" alt=\"Phrygana near Azalas\"><br \/>\n<small>Flowers everywhere!<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/fabaceae\/trifolium_grandiflorum_flower-1.jpg\" alt=\"Trifolium grandiflorum\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Trifolium grandiflorum<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/plantaginaceae\/plantago_cretica-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Plantago cretica\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Plantago cretica<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>V<\/big>ery common on Naxos is the Mediterranean hartwort with its delicate white flowers and characteristic fruits.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/apiaceae\/tordylium_apulum_detail-1.jpg\" alt=\"Mediterranean hartwort, Tordylium apulum\"><br \/>\n<small>Mediterranean hartwort, <em>Tordylium apulum<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>W<\/big>e find the pretty jumping spider <em>Philaeus chrysops<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/spiders\/philaeus_chrysops-1.jpg\" alt=\"Philaeus chrysops\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Philaeus chrysops<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>T<\/big>he fluffy inflorescences of <em>Lagoecia cuminoides<\/em> are particularly pretty, albeit rather inconspicuous.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/apiaceae\/lagoecia_cuminoides_detail-1.jpg\" alt=\"Lagoecia cuminoides\"><br \/>\n<small><em>Lagoecia cuminoides<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><big>T<\/big>he Venus crest is unmistakable due to its long fruits.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/apiaceae\/scandix_pecten_veneris_detail-2.jpg\" alt=\"Venus' comb or Stork's needle, Scandix pecten-veneris\"><br \/>\n<small>Venus&#8217;
