The path leads past a picturesque plateau called Kark\u00f3s, where some magnificent old oak trees grow. Several old stone houses bear witness to the former use of this area. Today, the former vineyards are grazed by sheep. Right next to the grove on the slope of Mount Koraki\u00e1 lies the small church <a href=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/en\/naxos-panagia-chrysopigi-apiranthos\/\">Panag\u00eda Chrysopig\u00ed<\/a>, which was originally a Mycenaean tomb.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/landscape\/apiranthos_from_karkos-3.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"valley of Karkos Apiranthos Naxos\"><br \/>\n<small>looking over the valley of Kark\u00f3s towards Ap\u00edranthos<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/landscape\/fotodotis_view_from_n_1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"monastery Fotodotis Danakos Naxos\"><br \/>\n<small>Toward the south lies Danak\u00f3s; here the view of the fortified monastery Fotod\u00f3tis.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/landscape\/karkos_7-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Vallonean oak grove at Karkos Apiranthos Naxos\"><br \/>\n<small>On the northern slope of the valley of Kark\u00f3s stand magnificent Vallonean oaks.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/landscape\/karkos_5-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"stone houses at Karkos Apiranthos Naxos\"><br \/>\n<small>In these beautiful old stone houses lived the farmers when they had work in the vineyards.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/fagaceae\/quercus_macrolepis-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Vallonean oak at Karkos Apiranthos Naxos\"><br \/>\n<small>In the grove grow the largest oak trees I have ever seen.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/landscape\/karkos_oak-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Vallonean oak at Karkos Apiranthos Naxos\"><br \/>\n<small>Here in spring. The diameter of the crown from branch tip to branch tip is an incredible 30 metres.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/fagaceae\/quercus_macrolepis_detail-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Vallonean oak at Karkos Apiranthos Naxos\"><br \/>\n<small>Standing under this tree, it is easy to understand that oaks were once considered sacred trees!<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/fagaceae\/quercus_macrolepis_detail-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Vallonean oak at Karkos Apiranthos Naxos\"><br \/>\n<small>The gigantic branches bend down like a giant umbrella.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/flora\/fagaceae\/quercus_macrolepis_fruit-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Vallonean oak at Karkos Apiranthos Naxos\"><br \/>\n<small>This grove consists of Vallonean oaks <em>(Quercus macrolepis)<\/em>, a species that is widespread in south-east Europe and was probably introduced to Naxos. It can easily be recognised by its very large, spiny fruit cups.
