I<\/big>f you like boating, you can join one of the many boat trips from Naxos town or from \u00c1gia \u00c1nna, mostly to the south coast of Naxos and to Koufon\u00edsi. We choose the boat Iason and the trip from \u00c1gia \u00c1nna to the bay of R\u00edna, with four shorter stops for swimming and one longer break with barbecue in Kaland\u00f3s.<\/p>\n

\nNear Mikr\u00ed V\u00edgla we pass these beautiful rocks where some shags are sitting in the sun after diving for fish.<\/small><\/p>\n

\nThe rounded rocks consist of granodiorite.<\/small><\/p>\n

\nOn a larger islet stands a small chapel.<\/small><\/p>\n

\"\"
\nAfter the cape of Alyk\u00f3, where the boat anchors for some time so that the passengers can swim for a while, we pass the settlement of Agiass\u00f3s. In the middle background you can see the steep mountain of Apal\u00edrou on which lie the ruins of a large Byzantine fortress, to which the bay of Agiass\u00f3s served as a harbor. On the far right of the picture Mount Zas, the highest mountain of Naxos, is visible.<\/small><\/p>\n

\nAfter Agiass\u00f3s the south coast is mostly uninhabited. We pass this picturesque cliff.<\/small><\/p>\n

\nThe southwest end of Naxos is lonely, dry and barren. On the mountain slopes grows an open maquis of Phoenicean juniper.<\/small><\/p>\n

\nnear the southern tip of Naxos<\/small><\/p>\n

\nWe first pass the large bay of Kaland\u00f3s and continue to the bay of R\u00edna.<\/small><\/p>\n

\nrocky coast near R\u00edna<\/small><\/p>\n

\nSeveral other yachts and cruise boats are already moored in the bay – no longer an insider tip.<\/small><\/p>\n

\nAt the large, sheltered bay of Kaland\u00f3s with a new pier there is a two-hour break during which the crew prepares and serves food: Meat skewers, salad and tzatziki.<\/small><\/p>\n

\nThe bay of Kaland\u00f3s has a long, beautiful sand beach. Behind it lies a large wetland area with reeds and rushes.<\/small><\/p>\n

\nIn the reed (Phragmites australis)<\/em> breed moorhens and reed warblers (common and great reed warbler). At this time of year, however, nothing can be seen of these species.<\/small><\/p>\n

\nDespite the little rainfall in winter, the small stream that flows into the sea next to the pier has some water. We find a Balkan pond turtle.<\/small><\/p>\n

\"\"
\nThe pond turtle is found on Naxos in several rivers that have water all year round and at some estuaries. It lives also in brackish water and can survive dry periods buried in the mud.<\/small><\/p>\n

\"Blaue
\nIn the river we also find some individuals of the Atlantic blue crab, an invasive species coming from America. This species often lives in brackish water and even in the fresh water of estuaries. With a dorsal shield of up to 20 cm width the Atlantic blue crab ist quite large, and it is also very aggressive: When we hold a twig within reach they snap at it with their pinces – accordingly, we refrain from trying to catch one.<\/small><\/p>\n

\"Calomera
\nOn the sandy beach we find many tiger beetle of the species\u00a0Calomera littoralis<\/em>. These restless beetles fly up before us as we walk along the beach. They have dark brown, slightly coppery elytra (hard forewings not used for flying) with characteristic white spots, the foremost of which is C-shaped. The beetles are predators feeding on small insects. The larvae live in holes they dig in the sand, waiting there for small prey.<\/small><\/p>\n

A<\/big>t 5 pm we arrive back in \u00c1gia \u00c1nna tired and a bit sun-roasted, but satisfied.<\/p>\n
