Such a walk is particularly rewarding on a calm day when it is possible to look right into the water. With a bit of luck, you can observe in this way quite a few interesting marine animals.<\/p>\n<p><small>By clicking on the images, you&#8217;ll be directed to the page where I describe the respective organisms in more detail (so far only in German).<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020393-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"the coast at Agios Dimitris, Moutsouna\"><br \/>\n<small>View from the chapel towards the north; in the left part of the image, the freshwater springs are recognizable.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020386-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"freshwater springs in the sea, Agios Dimitris\"><br \/>\n<small>At the small chapel \u00c1gios Dim\u00edtris, there are strong freshwater springs in the sea &#8211; the lighter fresh water bubbles up to the surface.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/seagrasses\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020266-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"sea grass, Posidonia oceanica, on the beach\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>In the small bay of Firolimn\u00e1ri, heaps of seaweed, torn off during winter storms, pile up on the beach.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020270-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"marble rock with dendrites, manganese oxide\"><br \/>\n<small>On the marble rocks, you can occasionally find &#8220;dendrites&#8221; mineral deposits of manganese oxide, that take shapes resembling fossilized leaves.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/schleimfische-und-grundeln\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/fish\/coryphoblennius_galerita-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Coryphoblennius galerita\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>A Montagu&#8217;s blenny <em>(Coryphoblennius galerita)<\/em> perches in the shallow water.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/cephalopods\/octopus_vulgaris-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Octopus vulgaris\" \/><br \/>\n<small>The girls discover a small octopus among the rocks.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/tintenfische\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/cephalopods\/octopus_vulgaris-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Common ocopus, Octopus vulgaris\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>It&#8217;s a Common octopus <em>(Octopus vulgaris)<\/em>. I barely manage to capture this photo before it shoots away.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/seegurken\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/sea_cucumbers\/holothuria_sanctori-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Holothuria forskali\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Next to it sits a sea cucumber, <em>Holothuria forskali.<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020291-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Kryfolimanaki\"><br \/>\n<small>Adjacent to Firolimn\u00e1ri lies this wonderful bay with a small sandy beach.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020293-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"conglomerate at the coast\"><br \/>\n<small>To the north, the coastline consists partly of tightly cemented river deposits (conglomerate).<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/DSCN3732-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"conglomerate at the coast\"><br \/>\n<small>under the conglomerate<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/mesolitoral\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020359-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tidal pools\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>On the subsequent promontory, there are numerous fissures in the rocks and tidal pools.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/DSCN3746-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tidal zone\"><br \/>\n<small>Exploring the tidal zone is always fun!<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/supralitoral\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020307-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"rocks in the splash zone\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>The rocks in the splash zone are eroded by blue-green algae, often forming holes which retain the water for some time.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/mesolitoral-4.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"holes in the rocks in the splash zone\"><br \/>\n<small>In the regularly flooded holes, various types of algae grow, here even a sea anemone (in the center of the image).<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/seeanemonen\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/sea_anemones\/aiptasia_mutabilis-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Trumpet anemone, Aiptasia mutabilis\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Trumpet anemone<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/seeanemonen\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/sea_anemones\/actinia_equina-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Beadlet anemone, Actinia equina\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Beadlet anemone<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/braunalgen\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/brown_algae\/unidentified_brown_alga-4.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>This stout species of brown alga grows right at the waterline; I haven&#8217;t been able to identify it yet.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/kalkrotalgen\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/red_algae\/tenarea_tortuosa-2.jpg\" alt=\"Tenarea tortuosa\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Calcified red algae like <em>Tenarea tortuosa<\/em> are also common here.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/schwaemme\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/sponges\/cliona_celata-4.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Cliona celata\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>a sponge living in the limestone <em>(Cliona celata)<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/seepocken\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/crustaceans\/chthamalus_stellatus-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Poli's stellate barnacles, Chthamalus stellatus\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Poli&#8217;s stellate barnacles live on the rocks above the waterline.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/krebse\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/crustaceans\/palaemon_spec-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Palaemon elegans\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>a shrimp species <em>(Palaemon elegans)<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020358-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"rocky coast\"><br \/>\n<small>In this area larger holes have formed in the rocks.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/P1020360-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"rocky coast\"><br \/>\n<small>Some of the holes are very deep.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/DSCN3924-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"the kofinides, large holes in the rocks near Agios Dimitris\"><br \/>\n<small>in the hole<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/DSCN2903-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"rocky coast\"><br \/>\n<small>Further north, the coast consists of particularly deeply fissured marble blocks.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/kalkalgentrottoir\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/DSCN2906-1_450.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"rocky coast\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>The marble rocks here are also covered with countless organisms.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/blaualgen\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/cyanobacteria\/cyanobacteria_black_white-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blue-green algae in the splash zone\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>The coating with blue-green algae extends high up into the splash zone.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/sea\/cyanobacteria\/cyanobacteria_black_white-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blue-green algae in the splash zone\"><br \/>\n<small>In the blue-green algae coating, such structures seem to form possibly due to the rainwater.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/azalas.de\/napfschnecken\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/azalas.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/photos\/naxos\/fauna\/sea_snails\/patella_feeding_traces-1.jpg\" alt=\"traces of feeding limpets\"><\/a><br \/>\n<small>What could this be?
