Quarries and statues

The island’s deposits of excellent marble and emery were of great importance for the cultural and economic development of Naxos, which led to the island becoming an early centre of marble processing: the first Greek monumental statues were produced here and the first temples were built with all their components made of marble. One can still visit the ancient quarries today, and three unfinished ancient marble statues left in the quarries are among the island’s most important sights.
